Miami’s main walking and biking routes are the Underline, a linear park under the Metrorail from Brickell heading southwest, and the Baywalk and Riverwalk along Biscayne Bay and the Miami River downtown. For off-road riding, the city lists mountain bike and walking trails on Virginia Key.

The Underline

The Underline runs beneath the Metrorail tracks. Friends of The Underline calls it Miami’s first 10-mile linear park and urban trail, “from Brickell to Dadeland,” linking 14 neighborhoods and eight Metrorail stations.

  • Open now: five continuous miles, after Segment 4, from Southwest 27th Avenue to Douglas Road, opened in May 2026, according to the group’s announcement. Segment 4 is the nearly one-mile stretch between 27th and 37th avenues.
  • Hours: the main trail is open 24 hours. The Urban Gym and Flex Court are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • The north end: the River Room sits between the Miami River and Southwest Seventh Street, with river views, butterfly gardens and lawns. The Promenade runs between Southwest Eighth Street and the Brickell Metrorail station, with separate bike and walking paths, game tables and a 50-foot communal table.
  • Getting there: eight Metrorail stations sit along the route.
  • Dogs are welcome; see our dog-friendly Miami guide.

Baywalk and Riverwalk

The Baywalk follows Biscayne Bay through downtown and the Riverwalk follows the Miami River. The Miami Downtown Development Authority says:

Path Length Complete
Downtown Baywalk about 5 miles 89%
Miami Riverwalk and on-road Greenway about 10 miles 68%

Recent Baywalk sections include a northern segment at the Miami Woman’s Club, 1737 N. Bayshore Drive; a 1,100-foot stretch just north of the Kaseya Center at 801 Biscayne Blvd.; and a link at First Miami Presbyterian Church, 609 Brickell Ave. On the river, a section at 300 Biscayne Blvd. Way connects the InterContinental hotel area to the Epic Marina.

The gap: the Baywalk is broken at the MacArthur Causeway (I-395). The DDA is designing a pedestrian and bike bridge under the causeway to link the Pérez Art Museum Miami and Maurice A. Ferré Park to the former Herald Plaza. Until then, the DDA says, walkers and cyclists have to go around on Biscayne Boulevard.

Bayfront parks along the way, including Bayfront Park and Maurice A. Ferré Park, are on our parks and trails guide.

Coconut Grove

David T. Kennedy Park, 2400 S. Bayshore Drive, lists bicycle paths, outdoor gym equipment and waterfront access, with parking. It is open sunrise to sunset.

Virginia Key

The City of Miami’s parks pages list mountain bike trails and walking trails on Virginia Key, across the Rickenbacker Causeway. The city’s Miami Rowing Center, 3601 Rickenbacker Causeway, keeps its walking trail open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. November to March and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. April to October, according to the city’s aquatics page. The Virginia Key Outdoor Center, which rented bikes and kayaks, says on its site that it has closed.

Safety

  • Use the separate bike and walking lanes where the Underline has them.
  • Report a broken light, a damaged path or debris to 311.
