Garbage: twice a week

The city’s rules for the green garbage cart:

  • Put the cart out 12 to 24 hours before the morning of pickup.
  • Keep it at least 5 feet from trees, cars, light poles and other obstructions so the truck’s arm can reach it.
  • Take it back in within 24 hours after pickup. A cart left out longer can bring a citation.
  • Missed pickup? Call 311.

A lost or broken cart is replaced through the city’s cart replacement page.

Recycling: the blue cart

Recycling follows the same set-out rules as garbage: out 12 to 24 hours ahead, 5 feet clear, back in within 24 hours. Check your recycling calendar on the schedule page for your day. From the city’s do’s and don’ts:

  • Yes: clean, dry newspapers, magazines and catalogs; flattened cardboard, including cereal and pizza boxes; steel and aluminum food and drink cans; juice, milk and drink cartons; plastic bottles (flattened, cap back on) and glass bottles; plastic tubs and jugs such as butter and yogurt tubs.
  • No: plastic bags; foam cups, plates and food containers; straws; food and household garbage; yard waste and bulky trash; propane and oxygen tanks; paint, pesticides, aerosol cans and motor oil; window glass, mirrors and light bulbs; clothing, furniture and carpet; batteries; coat hangers, small appliances, pots, pans and power tools.
  • Electronics (computers, monitors, TVs, cellphones) stay out of the cart. The department takes most tabletop electronics and batteries at periodic electronics recycling events.

Lithium batteries can start fires in recycling trucks, the city warns. Take them to a drop-off location instead.

Bulky trash: once a week

The city picks up bulky trash once a week. It takes household furniture, household electronics, appliances (“white goods”) and clean yard trash.

  • Put items in front of your property the evening before collection.
  • Tie loose items in bundles no longer than 3 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds.
  • Keep yard trash separate from garbage and recycling, and never in the blue cart.
  • Illegal dumping can be reported to 311 or on the city’s illegal dumping form.

The Mini Dump

City of Miami residents can drop off bulky items themselves at the Mini Dump, 1290 NW 20th St. The city’s Mini Dump page lists:

Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday 8 a.m. to noon
Closed Sunday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Christmas Day
  • Bring one proof of City of Miami residency: a Florida driver’s license or ID, a recent utility bill, a rental agreement or a tax bill.
  • One trip a day, no more than a pickup-truck load.
  • Accepted: household furniture, household electronics, white goods and clean yard trash.
  • Not accepted: household garbage, construction and demolition debris, hazardous waste, paint containers and auto parts. Commercial vehicles, dump and panel trucks, and contractors’ loads are turned away.

Holidays

The Department of Solid Waste works through nearly every holiday. It closes only on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Christmas Day. When your pickup falls on one of those days, it moves to your next scheduled pickup day. The next two closures:

  • Christmas, Friday, Dec. 25, 2026
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 18, 2027

Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day and the other holidays are normal pickup days.

Paint and household chemicals

Paint, pesticides, pool chemicals and solvents do not go in either cart or to the Mini Dump. Miami-Dade County runs two Home Chemical Collection Centers open to residents free, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, at 8831 NW 58th St. and 23707 SW 97th Ave., Gate B, according to the county listing posted by the City of North Miami. Commercial waste, explosives, ammunition and medical waste are not accepted. Call 311 for details.

What this means for you

  • Look up your address once and save your three days: garbage, recycling and bulky trash.
  • Get carts back off the curb within 24 hours of pickup.
  • Christmas Day is the next day with no pickup; everything else this fall runs as normal.
  • Furniture or a fridge? Set it out the night before your bulky day, or take it to the Mini Dump with proof you live in the city.
