Thanksgiving in Miami 2026: turkey trots and what is closed

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026. Miami-Dade County offices close Thursday and Friday, county libraries close Thursday through Saturday, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools students are out the whole week. The big morning run is the Life Time Turkey Trot Miami at Tropical Park.

Turkey trot

Life Time Turkey Trot Miami, Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 26, at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40th St. The race has a 5K, a 10K and a kids race and is presented by Baptist Health. The Life Time Foundation’s volunteer listing for 2026 runs Nov. 22-26 and asks for help with runners and walkers on Thanksgiving Day. Start times, packet pickup and parking for 2026 had not been posted when we checked. We will add them here when Life Time publishes them.

What is open and closed

Schools: the M-DCPS calendar lists Nov. 23-25 as recess days, Nov. 26 as the Thanksgiving holiday and Nov. 27 as a recess day for students and employees. Classes resume Monday, Nov. 30.

County: Miami-Dade County’s 2026 holiday list names Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, and the Friday after, Nov. 27. The library system lists Thanksgiving weekend as Nov. 26, 27 and 28.

Trash: the City of Miami Department of Solid Waste closes only on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Christmas Day, according to its pickup schedule page, so Thanksgiving and the Friday after are regular pickup days. In its 2025 holiday notice the department asked Thursday and Friday customers to set items out 12 to 24 hours before pickup. Pickup days and rules are on our trash and recycling guide.

Museums: Miami Children’s Museum is closed on Thanksgiving.

Community meals

We have not found a published 2026 community Thanksgiving dinner in Miami yet. Shelters and churches usually announce theirs in November. If your group is serving a free public meal, send the date, time and address through our contact page and we will list it here.
