Electricity in Miami is delivered by Florida Power & Light (FPL). Outages, downed lines and restoration all go to FPL, as Miami-Dade County’s storm guidance directs.

- FPL customer service (billing, start or stop service): 1-888-988-8249, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

Report it
You have three ways to tell FPL the power is out:
- Phone: 1-800-468-8243, which FPL lists as available any time.
- Online: the outage page on fpl.com, where you can also check the status of an outage at your address.
- App: the FPL Mobile App for iPhone and Android. Text “App” to MyFPL (69375) for the download link, FPL’s Storm Center says.
Check the map
FPL’s Power Tracker is an interactive map of outages and restoration across its service area. Each pin is an outage; click one for details. The page also shows the share of FPL customers with power systemwide.
Downed power lines
Miami-Dade County’s hurricane guidance is blunt: after a storm, watch for downed electrical wires, and to report one, call FPL at 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243). Do not call 911 just to report a downed line.
After a hurricane: damaged meters and masts
If storm damage reaches the service mast or meter can on your house, FPL may not be able to reconnect you until it is fixed. The county says you will then need a licensed electrical contractor to make the repairs and file for an electrical permit before or right after the work. In the City of Miami, electrical permits go through the city’s Building Department; see our building permits guide.
Generators
Portable generators of 10,000 running watts or less have been exempt from Florida sales tax since Aug. 1, 2025, with no holiday needed; see our hurricane prep guide.
Other numbers during an outage
Power is FPL’s job, but an outage often comes with other problems:
| Problem | Who to call |
|---|---|
| Water or sewer emergency | Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, 24 hours: 305-274-9272 |
| Trees or debris blocking a city street, drainage | City of Miami Resilience and Public Works, 305-416-1200, or 311 |
| Fire or life-threatening emergency | 911 |
| Police, non-emergency | City of Miami Police, 305-579-6111 |
| Open evacuation centers and county information during a storm | 311 |
FPL’s mailing address for customer correspondence is FPL General Mail Facility, Miami, FL 33188-0001, according to its contact page.
Medical needs
If someone in your home depends on electric medical equipment, register with Miami-Dade’s Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program before a storm. It provides specialized transportation, shelter and medical monitoring for eligible residents. Apply online or call 311. Details are in our hurricane prep guide.
