Trunk-or-treat and Halloween events
Trunk-or-treats, where neighbors hand out candy from decorated car trunks in a parking lot or park, are a safer alternative to door-to-door, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue says. These are the Halloween events posted by their organizers so far:
- 10th Annual Spooky Science Monster Mash, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, Frost Science, 1101 Biscayne Blvd. “Come in costume,” the museum says. Presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority. (Frost Science)
- Red Bull Flugtag Miami, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd. Free. Homemade flying machines off a flight deck into the bay. (Bayfront Park)
- Vizcaya Late: Spooky Edition, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 S. Miami Ave. $15. An evening event with outdoor film screenings. (Vizcaya)
- Laser Evening, 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, Frost Planetarium, including a Halloween Spooktacular laser show. (Frost Science)
Shenandoah Park: the Shenandoah Neighborhood Association has held a free Halloween celebration with a trunk-or-treat, costume parade, food trucks and scare zones at Shenandoah Park, 1800 SW 21st Ave., listed by the city for 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween 2023. No 2026 notice had been posted when we checked. Watch the city’s events page.
We add trunk-or-treats here when the organizer publishes the details.
Safety tips from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue
From the county’s Halloween safety page:
- Go together. Young children should always be with an adult; older kids should go in small groups.
- Stay visible. Stick to well-lit streets and sidewalks. Where there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic. Carry flashlights or glow sticks, never candles or torches, and add reflective tape to costumes and bags.
- Cross carefully. Use crosswalks and never assume a driver will stop.
- Pick your houses. Visit only homes with the porch light on, and never go inside a stranger’s home.
- Check the candy. Children should not eat anything until an adult has looked at it at home. Throw out anything homemade or unwrapped.
- Costumes: soft, flexible props instead of rigid swords or sticks, and shoes that fit.
- Consider an event. The department suggests a party at home or an organized trunk-or-treat as a safer choice than door to door.
Drivers: slow down and watch for children, especially on residential streets, the department says.
